The slow, steady rhythm of the rain against the windowpane created a soothing backdrop to the quiet afternoon. George, curled up on the sofa with a good book, found himself sinking into the story's world. His cat, Mittens, purred contentedly in his lap. The world beyond his home had ceased to exist.

A loud pounding at the front door jerked him back to the present. It was Mr. Davis, his face a mask of annoyance. "George! The television! The volume is too high!"

George felt a sigh escape his lips. He rose from the sofa, his cat meowing in protest. "My apologies, Mr. Davis," he said, opening the door. "I'll adjust it immediately." He closed the door and turned down the TV.
